FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Baldwinville, MA – May 17, 2015 – PETE FARBER RACING’s equipment won the 35th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia, on May 15-17, 2015, but not in the way the team originally expected it to.
Faced with hot and humid air on Friday afternoon, Farber prepared his supercharged CRC Automotive Brākleen ‘69 Dodge Daytona for NHRA Pro Modified qualifying. In round one, tire shake forced him to lift, and the resulting 9.860 at 88.95 mph pass only reaffirmed that the track conditions were tricky. For round two, however, Farber launched hard and kept his Daytona hooked up all the way down the track. Farber’s great 5.907 at 246.08 mph run included a 0.976-second dash to the sixty-foot mark, and ranked him second for the class. For Saturday morning’s round three of qualifying, Farber churned out another impressive run of 5.926 at 246.26 mph and held steady in the number two spot.
The team felt confident in how consistently their car was running, and Farber knew he had all the power he needed. Once eliminations started on Saturday, however, it became clear that soaring track temperatures would cause a problem. Farber lined up against Mike Castellana in round one, and encountered severe tire shake almost as soon as he launched which allowed Castellana to get the win.
Farber’s weekend didn’t end there, however. Friend and fellow racer Kenny Lang was in need of a replacement motor to continue his weekend, and Farber stepped up by generously loaning his spare engine and Al Billes supercharger setup to the Canadian-based driver of the Summit Racing Equipment ‘69 Camaro.
Lang and Farber, along with Farber’s crew chief and tuning guru Al Billes, used their combined knowledge to formulate a plan for Sunday’s remaining elimination rounds. Their strategy paid off, and Lang wound up running the quickest ET of each round until he wound up in the finals against Troy Coughlin. There, Lang faced a track temperature of 132°F but the collective effort of his team and Farber’s allowed him to run straight down the groove to score the overall event win – his first since 2010.
“I’m really glad I was able to help out Kenny,” said Farber. “I’ve learned so much from him, and he’s been such a huge help to me over the years. It was good to be able to return the favor and watch him get to the winner’s circle with our engine combination and Al Billes’ help.”
Farber is currently fifth overall in the NHRA Pro Mod championship series points, and will race at the upcoming 46th annual Toyota NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey, on June 5-7, 2015.
