ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. – Mike Janis claimed the No. 1 qualifying position and a first round victory Saturday during theNHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Toyota NHRASummernationals.
This weekend’s Pro Mod competition at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park is co-presented bySmithfield Foods and Western Beef and is the fourth of 10 events in the season.
New York native Janis drove his supercharged Jan-Cen RacingEngines 2013 Camaro to a performance of 5.775 seconds at 250.41 mph to earn hissecond consecutive No. 1 qualifying position of the season and fourth of hiscareer.
“We thought we were going to go a low-80 or so becausethe sun was out in the middle of the day,” Janis said. “We had noidea we were going to go a 77. I was shooting for another 79 or 80 but the 77was definitely a bonus. Hats off to my crew, my son, everybody involved.”
Janis defeated Gerry Capano in the first round. He will havelane choice when he meets Troy Coughlin Jr. in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Houston winner DonWalsh qualified second with a 5.799 at 254.14 in his late model Precision TurboCamaro and outran Mike Knowles in the first round. Walsh will meet Kevin Fiscusin the quarterfinals.
Gainesville winner BobRahaim qualified third and raced to a first round victory over Jim Bell. Rahaimand reigning world champ Rickie Smith will meet in the quarterfinals. The otherquarterfinal pairing features second-generation racer Bill Glidden against TroyCoughlin.
Pro Mod eliminations continue Sunday at approximately 12:45p.m.
