Elma, NY – Mike Janis and his Jan-Cen Racing Engines/Mike Janis Superchargers Camaro is ready for this weekends NHRA Carolina Nationals in Charlotte, NC: but head into weekend with extremely heavy hearts.
“This will be a weekend we dedicate to Papa Lawler” said Mike Janis, Owner/Driver at MJR. “Our good friend and MJR crewman Dave Lawler lost his father this past weekend, and we are going to race in his honor. Dave has been a great friend of mine for almost forty years, and we need to bring the win home. We will keep Dave and his family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. On a happier note, we will be ready to rock in Charlotte after coming off a tough U.S. Nationals performance in Indy Labor Day Weekend. Anything that could have went wrong, pretty much did. NHRA Pro Modified is extremely competitive and staying ahead of the curve is always our game plan. Getting that first run in and hoping to qualify right away takes a ton of pressure off. However, that was not in our cards that weekend. We started out with a very little problem which cost us our first run. Next run she was on a great run and all of a sudden started misfiring around 3.50 seconds into the run. The guys stayed up all night and we worked our tails off to have the car ready for the final attempt on Sunday. We set the car up to go a 5.93 or 4 which would’ve put us right in the middle of the pack, nice and safe. The guy we had been running that round was having trouble staging, going in and out of the beams and we went up on the two-step a bunch of times. When you do that, the engine gets ice cold and beats the heck out of the valve springs. The car left the line and was off in 60′ by over four hundredths and we ended up running a 5.97, which put us in the 15th position. We headed back to the pits and found a bunch of broken valve springs from having to go up on the two-step that many times. While we were changing springs, the generator decides to break for the remainder of the weekend which just added to the chaos. This would bring us to eliminations on Monday. First round set us up against number two qualifier Troy Coughlin, driver of the JEGS Corvette. We went out and made our best run of the weekend at a 5.92 @ 243 mph, but that wasn’t enough for his 5.86 @ 247 mph. To be quite honest, I don’t even want to get into the whole situation that happened first round against Troy. They know exactly what they did and we will leave it at that. This cowboy wasn’t born yesterday, and it looks like the gloves are really going to be coming off these last three races. We took the high road and kept it professional, that is how we operate at our organization. We are professionals and represent so many great companies in this sport and keeping our composure was more important to us. The Jan-Cen Racing Engines/Mike Janis Superchargers Camaro is just going to have to do the talking on the track this weekend September 12th-14th in Charlotte,” said Janis.
Janis is currently sitting 2nd in the NHRA Pro Modified Championship Points Standings, 94 points (4 rounds) behind Rickie Smith with Charlotte, St. Louis, and Las Vegas to go.
Qualifying for Pro Modified at the NHRA Carolina Nationals starts Friday September 12th at 2:30 PM, follow with a 2nd session at 5:30 PM. There will be one final qualifying attempt Saturday September 13th at 2:30 PM with 1st round of eliminations to follow at 4:30 PM. Final eliminations will take place Sunday September 14th at 1 PM.
