The 34th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals mark the third event on the 2014 NHRA Pro Modified Tour. Held May 16-18 at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, GA the event marks the return of NHRA Pro Mods to the Atlanta area after a two year absence.
Heading into the event the points leader is Mike Castellana at the wheel of his Al-Anabi Camaro. Castellan took the win at the season opening Gator Nationals this past March. Castellana is followed by the most recent winner on the tour, Mike Janis. The new Grandpa has added Cams to the family engine business. Camden James Janis born May 12th at 1:46pm, 7lb 8oz, 18 3/4 in long. Welcome to the world, Camshaft Janis! Rounding out the top five are last year’s points champion, Rickie Smith, Danny Rowe, and Steve “The American Dream” Matusek.
Rowe, who has finished runner-up in the points several times, is teammates with Matusek. Matusek, who is the son of a Hungarian immigrant and a first generation Polish/American, is a first generation American that has taken full advantage of “The American Dream”! Each Pro Modified team will be afforded three qualifying attempts with the first set for Friday at 3:45 PM and the second at 6:00 PM. The final attempt is scheduled for Saturday at 12:00 PM with the first round of eliminations set to go off at 2:45 PM.
The second round of eliminations is set for 12:00 PM Sunday with the semifinals at 2:15 PM and the finals scheduled for 3:40 PM. (schedule subject to change)
